What is the difference between Mardi Gras mask and masquerade? ›

Both Mardi Gras and masquerades often call for elaborate masks and finery, but the Mardi Gras party has a more specific focus; Mardi Gras conjures up images of jesters, beads, Bourbon Street, New Orleans, green and gold and purple, and drunken revelry.

Masking became a tradition because, during early Carnivals, people put on masks to be able to mingle outside their class and keep their reputation untarnished. Float riders are required to wear masks by law in keeping with the mystery and tradition, and many krewes never reveal who their king or queen is.

White Masquerade Masks show you are virtuous, fertile, clean, and of high status. Good if you would like others to feel you have high aspirations and confidence. Pink Masquerade Masks will show people you are upbeat, in good health and friendly. Blue Masquerade Masks show you are loyal and trustworthy.

There is no good masquerade ball without a good mask, and many options are available to you here. The most common mask would be the “domino mask”, or simply called “loup” in France. The loup is a mask covering the top half of your face made of velvet or black satin, sometimes embellished with lace.

In addition to your mask, you'll also need to consider your outfit. A masquerade party is usually a formal or semi-formal affair, so you'll want to dress up accordingly. A good rule of thumb is to wear something that you would wear to a co*cktail party or a wedding.

Masking is a tradition during Mardi Gras. Masks were first worn to escape society and class constraints. Today, float-riders are required to wear masks by law to keep in tradition and mystery of who is in which krewe. Float-riders often wear a costume as well that matches their float's theme.

Stay face-focused:

You will remove your mask at some point, so make sure your skin looks amazing. Press a long-wearing foundation into the skin with a damp makeup sponge and sweep on a cheek stain. Then, set it all with a finishing spray (Tanno loves Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray) rather than powder.
