Game Recap: Baseball |
HAMMOND, La. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored a run in the top of the ninth inning, holding on for a 9-8 win over the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team in Southland Conference action Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Islanders (22-33, 10-14 SLC) jumped on Southeastern (28-26, 10-14 SLC) early, sending all nine batters to the plate in the first. leading 5-0, A&M-Corpus Christi picked up another two runs in the second inning before the Lions had their first hit.
SLU was down, but not out.
After Jake Haze was hit by a pitch to open up the second, he advanced to third base on a groundout. Jude Hall beat then beat out an infield single, putting runners on the corners. Hall stole second. With a pair in scoring position, Rhett Rosevear brought home Haze with an RBI groundout. Cole Stromboe drove in Hall with an RBI single to left. Parker Coley brought Stromboe home with his 11th home run of the season, an opposite-field shot.
TJ Salvaggio was hit by a pitch to open up the third. After going first-to-third on Shea Thomas' single to center field, Salvaggio scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Haze.
Southeastern tied the game up, 7-7, with a pair of runs in the fourth. Rosevear and Stromboe led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Rosevear advanced to third on a Coley fielder's choice grounder that erased Stromboe at second. Ryan Brome plated Rosevear with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left. Coley then moved to second on a balk. A throwing error following an infield single by Salvaggio allowed Coley to come home with the tying run.
The bullpens settled the game down with Southeastern getting 4.2 scoreless innings out of Carson Robb and Maddox Thornton allowing just one run for the Islanders over 4.2 innings as well.
An unearned run in the eighth put A&M-Corpus Christi back on top, but Rosevear tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run. The homer was his second of the season. Southeastern has hit a total of 81 so far this season. That mark trails only the 83 homers hit by both the 1997 and 1998 squads on the program's single-season leaderboards.
A leadoff single in the ninth for the Islanders led to a two-out run which proved to be the winning run. Salvaggio would reach on a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth. He advanced to third on a pair of one-out wild pitches, but the Lions were unable to bring him home with the tying run.
Matthew Watson (3-4) earned the win, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings to close out the game. Hayden Robb (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing two runs – one earned – in his two innings of relief work.
Southeastern once again accumulated double-digit hits. Rosevear (3-for-4), Hall (2-for-4), Salvaggio (2-for-4) and Stromboe (2-for-4) all turned in multiple hits for the Lions.
