U2 (g) This Division of Section VIII does not contain rules to cover all details of design and construction. Where
complete details are not given, it is intended that the Manufacturer, subject to the acceptance of the Inspector, shall provide details of design and construction which will be as safe as those provided by the rules of this Division.

2019 Edition

U2 (g) This Division of Section VIII does not contain rules to cover all details of construction. Where complete details
of construction are not given, the Manufacturer, subject to the acceptance of the Authorized Inspector, shall provide the appropriate details to be used.
(1)Where design rules do not exist in this Division, one of the following three methods shall be used:
(-a) Mandatory Appendix 46.
(-b) proof test in accordance with UG-101.
(-c) other recognized and generally accepted methods, such as those found in other ASME, EN, ISO, national, and industry standards or codes. This option shall provide details of design consistent with the allowable stress criteria provided in UG-23.

Now I am being told
under 1c only EN code qualifies - How ?
Only Formulas could be used . Allowable stress as Sec II D only .

Is this correct ? Please add your views .

Rathnam,

these changes have been fiercely debated over the past years. We are still evaluating the chages it brings, and how to apply safely without violating the Code.

Did you realize that the new paragraph applies to "DESIGN OF CONSTRUCTION" rather than "AND". This means it is limited to design now. This is to avoid abusing U-2(g) for other construction aspects. Additive manufacturing for example.

You are being told inaccurate information. Pease read:

-c) other recognized and generally accepted methods, such as those found in other ASME, EN, ISO, national, and industry standards or codes. This option shall provide details of design consistent with the allowable stress criteria provided in UG-23.

This is not related to EN. Actually we are using BS, AD-Merkblätter, AS, and other standards where they make sense. That can continue. The stress limits and the permissible materials must be applied, but that has been always a condition of this most powerful U-2(g).

Dear Dr.Kolbl

Many thanks for your reply .
It was claimed only EN code is recognized as it is current ; national codes have all been superseded .

I have to confess now that I had no answer for this argument .

Fatigue calculations are now as per Mandatory Appendix 46 i.e. we have to necessarily use Div 2 only .
No more BS 5500 for fatigue calculations !

Dr. Kölbl,
You stated that

...This means it is limited to design now.

Why is it limited to design only?

The new U-2(g) stated that:

...Section VIII does not contain rules to cover all details of construction. Where complete details of construction are not given...

So when there are no rules for construction one can use other methods, is it true?

The definition of "construction" as per ASME Section VIII.1 Foreword is:

Construction, as used in this Foreword, is an all-inclusive term comprising materials, design, fabrication, examination, inspection, testing, certification, and pressure relief.

On the other hand, U-2(g)(1) stated that

Where design rules do not exist in this Division...

And now, U-2(g) refer to Design nor Construction, why is that?

IdPVT,

when you read sub-sub paragraph 2, following comes up:

(2) The provisions of this paragraph shall not be used
to justify the use of materials, joining processes (fabrication),
examination, inspection, testing, certification, and
overpressure protection methods other than those allowed
by this Division.

I think that answers your question.

I am a little bit confuse.
At the first sentance of the paragraph it says that:

"...Section VIII does not contain rules to cover all details of construction. Where complete details of construction are not given..."

Then, U-2(g)(1) is refer to the Design nor Construction.

But, U-2(g)(2) is refer to anything but the Construction.

And, what does it say about other aspects than design?

(2) The provisions of this paragraph shall not be used
to justify the use of materials, joining processes (fabrication),
examination, inspection, testing, certification, and
overpressure protection methods other than those allowed
by this Division.

That is a very clear statement, right?
